Desktop Themes verleihen Windows XP ein schickes Design: Fensterrahmen, Zeichensätze, Wallpaper, Icons, Screensaver und mehr ? das alles können Sie Ihrem eigenen Geschmack anpassen und in Theme- Paketen kombinieren. Diese lassen sich dann in den Desktop-Eigenschaften unter Designs auswählen.

Im Web hat sich eine große Fan-Gemeinde gebildet, die solche Themes kostenlos anbietet, zum Beispiel unter www.themexp.org. Der Haken dabei: Die Themes lassen sich nicht soeinfach installieren. Empfohlen wird meist die Shareware Style XP (20 Dollar).

Kostenlose Themes
Es geht aber auch kostenlos: Zuständig für die Themes ist die Datei uxtheme.dll im System32-Verzeichnis, die verändert werden muss. Da sie sich im laufenden Windows-Betrieb nicht ändern lässt, erstellen Sie aus Sicherheitsgründen zunächst eine Kopie, zum Beispiel in c:\daten. Dieses Original können Sie, falls nötig, später wieder zurückspielen. Erstellen Sie eine zweite Kopie für die Änderungen, zum Beispiel in c:\newtheme.

Sie patchen nun diese Kopie mit einem Hexeditor, etwa mit Xvi32. Starten Sie Xvi32, öffnen c:\uxtheme.dll, wählen dann Search/Replace?und ersetzen die Zeichenkette 81 EC 80 00 00 00 56 57 durch 33 F6 8B C6 C9 C2 08 00. Sie kommt genau einmal vor. Speichern Sie die gepatchte DLL. Die geänderte Datei muss in das System32-Verzeichnis kopiert werden. Das Original wird dabei überschrieben.

Booten Sie dazu von der Windows- XP-CD und drücken Sie [R], um die Wiederherstellungskonsole zu starten. Melden Sie sich als Administrator an und geben Sie copy c:\uxtheme.dll c:\windows\system32\ ein. Bestätigen Sie das Überschreiben der Datei. Verlassen Sie die Konsole mit Exit. Windows startet neu.

Laden Sie ein paar Themes von www.themexp.org und kopieren Sie diese entpackt nach c:\windows\resources\themes. In diesem Ordner muss für jedes Theme eine theme-Datei vorhanden sein, also beispielsweise test.theme. Zusätzlich muss sich dort ein Ordner mit dem Theme-Namen befinden, in diesem Beispiel also Test. Dort sind die Ressourcen wie Bilder, Icons und so weiter gespeichert.

Die Themes rufen Sie über die Desktop- Eigenschaften und Designs auf. Die Patches sind für Windows XP, SP 1, SP 2 undWindows Server 2003 zwar identisch, aber jeweils ananderen Stellen in der uxthemes. dll vorzunehmen. Dabei hilft auch das Gratis-Tool ThemeMultipatcher.

Change your Desktop Themes free of charge ___

Desktop themes give Windows XP a beautiful design: Window framework, character sets, wallpapers, icons, screensaver and more – all this you can adapt to your own taste and combine in theme packages. These can be selected then in the desktop characteristics under designs. In the web there is a large fan community, which offers such themes free of charge, for example under www.themexp.org. But it is not as easy to install these themes. Usually the shareware style xp (www.tgtsoft.com, 20 dollar) is recommended.

You start Xvi32, open c:\uxtheme.dll, then select then search/replace and replace 81 EC 80 00 00 00 56 57 by 33 F6 8B C6 C9 C2 08 00. It occurs exactly once. Store the patchte DLL. The changed file you have to copy into the system32-directoty. The original will be overwritten. The you boot from the windows XP-CD and press [R], in order to start the re-establishment console. Start as administrator and enter copy c:\uxtheme.dll c:\windows\system32\. Confirm the overwriting of the file. Exit the console. Windows starts again.
Now download a few themes from www.themexp.org and copy them unzipped to c:\ windows\resources\themes. In this directory for each theme there must be an own theme-file. There resources are stored as pictures, icons and so on.
